Solid Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron (SSF-DI)

7/24/2026

Solid Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron (SSF-DI) is the most advanced ductile iron material developed in the casting industry to overcome the limitations of conventional ductile iron.

It is defined in international standards under the designations EN-GJS-450-18, EN-GJS-500-14, and EN-GJS-600-10.

What is SSF Ductile Iron and How is it Produced?

In conventional ductile iron, a pearlitic phase is formed or expensive alloying elements such as copper or nickel are added to achieve high strength. However, while pearlite increases hardness, it decreases elongation (ductility/toughness) and machinability.

In SSF technology, pearlite or expensive alloying elements are not used. Instead, the silicon (%Si) content is precisely increased to 3.2%–4.3%. Silicon atoms dissolve directly into the iron crystal lattice (solid solution strengthening), keeping the matrix fully ferritic. As a result, the material achieves very high strength without the need for pearlite.

Advantages of SSF Ductile Iron

  • High Yield Strength + High Ductility: Compared to conventional castings, it can withstand high loads while exhibiting excellent elongation and impact toughness rather than fracturing suddenly.
  • Superior Machinability: Since the matrix is fully ferritic without hard pearlite phases, tool wear is significantly reduced. This extends cutting tool life and substantially lowers machining costs.
  • Homogeneous Hardness and Microstructure: In conventional castings, thin sections cool rapidly and harden, while thick sections cool slowly and remain soft. In SSF, uniform hardness and mechanical properties are achieved across all section thicknesses.
  • Weight Reduction Potential: Thanks to its high yield strength, component wall thicknesses can be safely reduced, allowing for lighter structural designs.
  • Cost-Effective Production: Because it eliminates the need for costly alloying elements (Cu, Ni, Mo), raw material costs remain lower.

Applications

SSF ductile iron is preferred in critical engineering components that require high strength, impact resistance, and precise machinability:

  • Automotive and Commercial Vehicles:
    • Suspension arms and control arms
    • Steering knuckles and wheel hubs
    • Axle housings and carrier brackets
    • Chassis structural mounts
  • Heavy Equipment and Agricultural Machinery:
    • Tractor housings and axle components
    • Combine harvester and loader mounting frames
    • Hydraulic pump bodies subjected to high pressure and vibration
  • General Mechanical Engineering:
    • Power transmission housings and gearbox casings
    • Wind turbine structural components
